Entrepreneurs Bettye and Jay D. Rodgers founded Smart Start after a ranch hand who worked on their property was convicted of Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) and had to use an Ignition Interlock Device (IID). However, they soon founded that the IID technology was unreliable.
Seeing an opportunity to improve the product and the process, the Rodgers decided to start their own Ignition Interlock company in 1992. Since then, Smart Start has served more than 1 million clients worldwide. Our Ignition Interlocks have recorded over a billion alcohol-free starts and prevented millions of engine starts when alcohol was present on the driver’s breath.
Personalized support for monitoring authorities
Smart Start was the first Ignition Interlock provider to introduce the concept of the Judicial Services Liaison (now known as a Business Development Representative). Each BDR focuses on a specific region, providing personalized service and area-specific information to monitoring authorities.
