Following the great tradition of educating Missouri lawyers forged by Bernie Edelman and our own mentors, Carl M. Ward and Jeffrey Eastman, we are excited to announce the creation of a new organization in Missouri: The Missouri DWI Institute, LLC. Our mission is to educate Missouri lawyers, judges, and law enforcement officers on the scientific and technical aspects of DWI law.
Together, an educated bar, bench, and law enforcement ensure efficient functioning of Missouri's judicial system from the streets to the courtroom. This also ensures accurate forensic science understanding, analysis, and application, which benefits all Missouri citizens.
In its inaugural program, the Missouri DWI Institute, LLC, will be presenting a two-day live online conference aimed at Missouri lawyers working from their living rooms during the novel COVID-19 pandemic. Missouri approved for 17.6 MCLE, including 3.0 Ethics with 1.0 Elimination of Bias, Kansas approved for 16.0 CLE hours, including 3 hours of Ethics & Professionalism, approved for the CLE requirement for NCDD membership, and qualified for DUIDLA Members CLE requirements, this two-day live online conference is truly geared to offer something for everyone. With breakout sessions, the novice will have an opportunity to learn the basics of practicing DWI law and science, and the veteran will have an opportunity to explore the intricate facets of this nuanced practice on a more expert level. Whether you are a prosecutor or defense lawyer, this is your opportunity to learn from the "best of the best" to better hone your trade!
During our inaugural year, you will learn from renowned national faculty including:
Luke Ryan, the Massachusetts defense attorney who uncovered the true scope of lab analyst Sonja Farak's misconduct related to forensic drug testing, uncovered a massive prosecutorial cover-up along the way, and relentlessly pursued justice leading to the overturning or dismissal of nearly 11,000 drug charges and/or convictions, which harrowing story was featured in the 2020 Netflix limited series documentary, "How to Fix a Drug Scandal;"
Janine Arvizu, the quality control analytical chemist hailing from New Mexico who uncovered problems in the forensic lab's quality control and the testing methods used to test bloodstains for DNA evidence, seriously calling into question the reliability of the State's blood evidence in the Steven Avery trial featured in the 2015 Netflix Docuseries, "Making a Murderer;" and
Chuck Rathburn, recognized by Missouri's Court of Appeals as an expert in breath testing, is one of the few attorneys in the United States who has been qualified by trial and appellate courts as an expert on breath testing, the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFSTs), and alcohol’s effects on the human body.
You will also learn from local seasoned DWI greats like Carl M. Ward, Jeffrey Eastman, and Travis Noble, among many others. View our esteemed 2020 Faculty Roster now to learn more.
